Twelfth international Andringa family day in Hindeloopen: 'I don't have to tell you my last name, do I?'
Hindeloopen was the scene of the twelfth international family day of the Andringas on Saturday.

The old Frisian family Andringa held another international family day in Hindeloopen on Saturday. "A family connects more than football."

"My name is Cees and I don't have to tell you my last name, do I?" When there is no response, he gives the answer himself: Andringa. "No! Really?", it sounds from café-restaurant De Foeke in Hindeloopen where chairman Cees Andringa of the Andringa Foundation opens the family day on Saturday.

This family day, accessible to every Andringa, attracts more than seventy visitors from home and abroad in this twelfth edition. Since 1982, there has been a get-together every leap year. In 1988, an extra edition even took place in Chicago. Only in corona year 2020 was the family day cancelled.

Families are very important

Upon entering De Foeke, guests receive a name card with a code about the family branch. After the opening, the first hugs quickly follow. "I meet a cousin of my father here. How nice", says Joke Andringa from Culemborg. She is visiting the family day for the first time, curious about the family book about the Andringas that her father leafed through so often. "Families are very important, I know from my professional experience", she continues. "I am an integrative child therapist and every time I see how influential the choices of parents and family members are on children."

She travelled to Hindeloopen together with Vincent Andringa from Baarn. She did not know him before, but foundation secretary Tsjikke Andringa from Feanwâlden had asked her if she could pick him up. During the trip he was able to tell her everything about the Andringa family days. He attended all of them, except the one in Chicago.

Driving force

Tsjikke Andringa also points out the great importance of a good family bond. "They are currently often talking about the connecting power of football, just before the European Championship," she tells the audience. "But of course that is nothing compared to the connecting power of a family." She then throws a ball of yarn into the room with the request to throw it to someone else. "To show that we are all connected."

She has been the driving force behind the Andringa Foundation almost since its foundation in 1981, and later also of the website Andringaonline.nl and the family newspaper Andringa Staach Nijs, which is published twice a year and sent to approximately five hundred Andringas. According to her, there are more than 4,000 known name bearers worldwide, divided over 13 families that can all be traced back to two Andringa brothers who were farmers on the Andringa State near Akkrum around 1450.

Every two years, an English edition of the family newspaper is also published. Readers of that edition include Judy Andringa and Cathy Bjorkquist from Chicago. The cousins combine the family day in Hindeloopen with a nine-day holiday in the Netherlands.

Before the Andringas have lunch and dive into the afternoon program with a walk and a visit to the skating museum, Tsjikke Andringa asks for a moment of attention. She reminds us that twelve visitors of the previous family day in 2016 have died, including former foundation chairman Herman Andringa. After twelve tea lights have been lit, a minute of silence is observed.

Cherish family ties

Jacob Andringa (30) from Hurdegaryp is one of the younger people present. Does he have an explanation for the fact that the Andringas cherish the family bond so much? ,,It is foaral te tankjen oan in pear tige aktive oanjagers lykas Tsjikke ("It is mainly due to the active supporters like Tsjikke"), he says. According to him, the beautiful, extensive family book also plays a role.

Sybrig Andringa from Heeg completely agrees. "The book (published in 1985 and updated in 1996 and 2016) shows that every Andringa you meet is family. And that we are such an old family, yes that makes you proud and enthusiastic of course."

A cozy bunch!
