The Legacy of Andringa

A Family History in Motion

In the vast landscapes of Friesland, where the wind has free rein and the air is often permeated with the smell of sea and meadow, a family history is anchored that stretches over generations.

This history belongs to the name Andringa, an old Frisian family name that is now borne by more than 4000 people, spread over thirteen different families. The Andringa family tree is rich and diverse, with more than 3000 in-laws who share this history.

The Andringa Foundation, a modest but passionate organization, watches over this rich heritage. Once started as a working group thanks to the initiative of drs. Ype Brouwers, the foundation was officially established on October 1, 1985. Since then, the foundation has been committed to mapping the different lineages of the Andringa family. Two extensive books document the different branches of the family and the historical lands, or 'sates', that bear the Andringa name.

The foundation, led by a small board and supported by various working groups, works tirelessly to digitize and update this valuable data. All this with the aim of realising a third, renewed edition that contains both the digitised family books and updated genealogical information.

All work is carried out by volunteers, with funding coming from contributions and donations. Board members and working group members do not receive any compensation for their efforts, nor for their travel expenses, proof of their dedication to the family.

An important highlight in the existence of the Andringa Foundation is the quadrennial national family day. This day, traditionally held in a leap year, is all about conviviality and strengthening family ties. Each event has a unique and attractive programme that offers space for discussions and meetings. The board also presents the reports of the past years and requests approval for future plans.

The foundation has several objectives. The first objective is to carry out ancestral research, the results of which are published. In addition, the foundation promotes family contacts and strengthens family ties by organising reunions for both domestic and foreign Andringas.

Another important objective is the publication of the biannual family bulletin, the "Andringa Staach Nijs". This bulletin, available in both Dutch and English, contains family announcements, articles and announcements. Finally, the foundation wants to expand the website and make it accessible online.

Anyone can become a donor to the Andringa Foundation by subscribing to the Andringa Staach Nijs for just 10 euros per year. As a subscriber, you will have access to the family tree pages via a password.
Other donations are of course also very welcome!!
